Marshall Black Photography - Oamaru

Smiths Grain Store.

The sleepy town of Oamaru on the East coast of New Zealand's south island, offers some interesting attractions. Well known for the Blue Penguin colony located at the harbour, there are also some interesting architectural features in the town.

Most of these buildings take advantage of the local limestone, to good effect.

This is the Smiths Grain Store building, dating from 1881-1882.

A fairly simple shot to take, I waited for the flag to billow in the wind.

The Totara Estate is where the first shipment of frozen meat from New Zealand to the other side of the world was sent from.

Shire Horse and tractor.

When I was photographing the shire horses I noticed the old tractor in the background. There seemed to be a connection between the two methods of transport, and I decided to concentrate on the horse's mane decorations, using depth of field to place the tractor as an out of focus background element.

An aperture of f8 seemed to do the trick with the lens set to 180mm.

Equipment.
Canon EOS1DII, ISO 200, 70-200 mm L at 180mm, 1/800th, f8, -2/3 EV, hand held.
